Knee Injury- 04/30/2010
I know that with training comes injuries. I’ve been very lucky in my training so far that I have only suffered minor injuries. I had decided last week to skip out on the Ruston Xterra. I just wasn’t “feeling” it. Since I have 11 Xterras on the agenda for this year, I figured that it would not hurt to skip one. I have been racing almost every weekend for the last two months and my body was screaming for rest. I decided to listen to it. Friday was scheduled for an easy ride and run out at Rowlett Creek Preserve with my buddy Dax. I was on my first short warm up lap when I came around a corner and my back wheel washed out. My reaction was to unclip my right foot and put it on the ground to keep me from falling over. When I did that, I must have landed straight legged. I had shooting pain in my knee. I stood there stunned for a moment assessing the situation. After a minute or so I bent my knee and moved around a bit to see if everything still worked! There was a little pain, but it seemed to all be in tact and working. I hopped back on my bike to spin it out. At this point there was nothing indicating that I should stop riding. There was little to no pain while pedaling, only a twinge here and there on the hills and if I had to put my foot down for any reason. I decided at that point that I would continue my ride and then skip the run. We did a very easy ride for about an hour and a half, then called it a night. On my drive home my knee felt a little “tweaky”, and had begun to swell a little. By the time I arrived home, it was swelling and hurting quite a bit. I grabbed an ice pack and hit the couch for a relaxing Friday evening. I was hobbling around the house at this point due to the pain. When I woke on Saturday morning, I could not straighten it all the way and it was hurting pretty badly. This was not encouraging! I was supposed to be doing Boot Camp that morning, but looked like that was out. I decided that it was going to be a chill on the couch kind of day. I have an Xterra race in TWO weeks! Better rest now and hopefully heal fast. My coach gave me the go ahead for a core/upper body workout on Sunday with a no kick swim which made me feel a little better. The pain had lightened a lot by Sunday and I was starting to feel a bit hopeful for my speedy recovery! Monday morning came a little more pain than Sunday (oopsie.. must have worked out a little hard on Sunday) so I went to see my chiro in hopes for a good initial diagnosis and recovery plan. Her initial thoughts are that it is just a contusion and should heal fairly fast. I have another appointment with an Ortho on Wednesday, so we’ll see what he has to say. For now it’s rest, elevation, and ice. Which means no workouts till Thursday and that’ll be swimming again… no running/biking till I’m cleared. BOO!!!!!!
